Twisted Unity

There was a cold-minded satisfaction to be gained in tracing the arc of their success so far. It had been above and beyond what he’d thought was possible. Each of them had proved themselves through one perfectly executed kill. Together, they had earned what he considered to be membership of an elite club. An elite, and highly secret, club.

Pride surged through him as he thought about each scenario. The care that had gone into them, the imagination. It had all been carefully planned and discussed in the meeting rooms, sequestered away in that labyrinthine bookstore, in an atmosphere where mystery and darkness combined.

He suspected that it was more than just the convergence of deadly and like-minded souls. It was the place itself. The walls, the floors, the passages – they had all absorbed the dark thoughts and dreams of decades of inhabitants. And the place itself – it had always been something that society had frowned upon. A speakeasy, a brothel – he knew the history. Somewhere on these shelves, there was actually a local guidebook that described it in vivid detail.

Perhaps the place itself held onto the energy it received, and infused it back into those who were open to it. It was a strange idea, but he believed it was valid.

He’d felt the way that his own dark energies seemed to multiply when he was inside these twisted, curving walls. Not that he was blaming the place at all. He was a killer at heart, and he always had been.

But it had taken a bold leap of faith to make his fantasies reality – and more than that, to then open up and share his soul with the others. Even finding the others had been difficult – a labor of love that was only possible thanks to the bookstore.

Its presence had drawn them together, like a Dark Tower, a construction so well beloved of fantasy writers. He believed that the bookstore had played a pivotal role in creating the alliance he now had with the other worshipers of darkness.

The others who pretended to live normal lives, while within them, the abyss beckoned and loomed. And one by one, they had embraced their darkness. There was a spine-chilling glory in these acts. He considered them a form of worship… to the demons that each one of them owned and loved and nurtured.

Of course, the question was now – what next?

It was up to him to decide that he knew, because he’d been the leader from the get-go. But how to go forward? That was the exciting part.

Discussing it with the others would be important. An amalgamation of dark minds was, after all, what they were already. The others would have suggestions and he had no doubt that they would be excellent. Their imaginations had already surprised and impressed him.

“But what to do, where to go?” he said softly, tapping his fingers on the table. It was an old piece of furniture, and although polished, he could feel the grain of the wood with his fingertips.
